The Lunar Sail

In a crescent moon, I glimpse a sail
Upon a windblown sea;
I glimpse no hull nor mast nor rail,
Yet a canvas billows to me...

I see it circumnavigate,
This terrestrial world below;
It sails at a steady rate
Before the breeze's blow...

It passes archipelagos,
And islands of frothy cloud...
Westward ho! and on it goes,
Alone, no fleet to crowd...

In time, its shining tip
Will slip, below the horizon,
And others can see this ship,
And upon the sail put eyes on...

The luminous, lunar sail,
Outblown and billowing free...
Travels before the wind's exhale,
For the people of earth to see...
